2007 DELAWARE DAY FOURTH GRADE COMPETITION

Agency Logo

Welcome!

On Constitution Day, celebrated at Booker T. Washington Elementary School in Dover on Monday, September 17, 2007, Delaware's Secretary of State Dr. Harriet Smith Windsor invited students and teachers to study the Constitution as part of the Department of State's Annual Delaware Day Fourth Grade Competition.

Secretary Windsor challenged students to examine the Constitution, learn about Delaware's role in the writing and ratification of this historic document, and discover the reasons why the Constitution was only signed by 39 of the 55 delegates attending the federal Convention. Upon analyzing and interpreting the Preamble, students rewrote it in their own words in order to explain its meaning.

A total of 679 students and 31 teachers, representing 23 schools from throughout the state, accepted her challenge and prepared informative and artistic four-panel displays featuring original artwork, narrative responses to questions, a rap song, and other demonstrations.

Award-winning displays named in honor of Delaware's five signers--George Read, Gunning Bedford, Jr., John Dickinson, Richard Bassett, and Jacob Broom --were honored during an awards ceremony held at the Delaware Public Archives on December 1, 2007.
