2008 DELAWARE DAY FOURTH GRADE COMPETITION

Agency Logo

The theme of this year’s competition—citizen involvement—was chosen in large part to recognize the 75th anniversary of the official recognition of December 7 as “Delaware Day.”  In 1933, over 6,000 Delawareans successfully petitioned the state government to make the long-deserved declaration which acknowledged the day in 1787 when Delaware became the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.

Secretary of State Harriet Smith Windsor presented the Signers’ Awards—named after Delaware’s signers of the Constitution—to the schools who best answered questions about citizen involvement, petitioning, and the ratification process. Their submissions included narrative responses to the competition questions; petitions reflecting student ideas for celebrating Delaware Day; and hand-drawn illustrations, poems, cheers, political cartoons, and other creative and artistic displays demonstrating their knowledge.

Secretary of State Windsor developed the competition in 2002 to encourage students to study the Constitution and to understand Delaware's role in its writing and ratification. Over the past seven years 5,132 students, under the direction of 269 teachers, have participated in the competition program.
