ABOUT THE 2008 COMPETITION

Secretary of State Harriet Smith Windsor presented the Signers’ Awards—named after Delaware’s signers of the Constitution—to the schools who best answered questions about citizen involvement, petitioning, and the ratification process. Their submissions included narrative responses to the competition questions; petitions reflecting student ideas for celebrating Delaware Day; and hand-drawn illustrations, poems, cheers, political cartoons, and other creative and artistic displays demonstrating their knowledge.
 
The winners of this year’s Signers’ Awards are:
 
George Read Award -North Star Elementary School, Hockessin

Gunning Bedford, Jr. Award- Olive B. Loss Elementary School, Bear

John Dickinson Award
(tie) - Booker T. Washington Elementary School, Dover and Lake Forest Central Elementary School, Felton

Richard Bassett Award - East Millsboro Elementary School, Millsboro

Jacob Broom Award -Epworth Christian School, Laurel and St. John’s Lutheran School, Dover

 
Honorable mention was also given to the following schools for their participation:

Secretary of State Windsor developed the competition in 2002 to encourage students to study the Constitution and to understand Delaware's role in its writing and ratification. Over the past seven years 5,132 students, under the direction of 269 teachers, have participated in the competition program.
